Here at Altar of Earth, a non-profit organisation rooted in the heart of Scotland, we are devoted to the work of deep healing and reconnection. At the core of our mission is a response to the silent crisis that affects countless lives across the globe: the rising tide of suicide among both adults and children. We believe that suicide is not merely an individual tragedy, but a symptom of a much deeper disconnection disconnection from the self, from others, from nature, and from a sense of purpose. Guided by the principles of trauma-informed care, we recognise that behind every act of despair lies a story of unmet need, unacknowledged pain, and a longing for belonging.
Our work is grounded in the understanding that healing does not happen in isolation. Through outdoor-based educational and therapeutic programmes, we create spaces where people can begin to feel safe enough to feel again. We work with children, young people, and families from socio-economically disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds those most often excluded from the systems that are meant to care for them. By meeting them in the natural world, away from clinical settings, we support them in rediscovering their innate capacity for resilience, creativity, and connection.
Equally, we hold sacred the healing journeys of veterans, first responders, and civilians who carry the invisible wounds of service, crisis, or personal trauma. Our programmes offer not just tools for emotional regulation and mental health literacy, but pathways back to meaning and community. We do not pathologise suffering we honour it, listen to it, and invite people to explore what it is trying to say.
Our vision is of a world where no one has to choose death because life feels unlivable. Through relational, embodied, and nature-based approaches, we are working to reduce suicide by addressing its roots disconnection, shame, and unprocessed trauma and by nurturing the conditions in which human beings can truly thrive.
“We diagnose depression because it’s easier than admitting we have built a world that is poison to the human spirit.”

COME JOIN THE LIGHT OF AVALON PROGRAM
At Light of Avalon, we believe every child deserves a place to grow, play, and be truly seen. Our community offers a safe and nurturing space where children can explore ancient traditions, connect with the natural world, and form lasting friendships rooted in kindness and respect. Whether they’re crafting, dancing, learning archery, or simply sitting around a fire listening to stories, children here are invited to be fully themselves wild-hearted, gentle-spirited, and deeply held. This is more than a program; it’s a circle of belonging.
Connection As Therapy
We explore how pain often masks deeper truths and how connection, presence, and understanding become the medicine we all need. Through heartfelt conversations and stories, we invite you to sit with your own suffering with curiosity and compassion, recognizing it not as a flaw but as a doorway to greater healing. This is not about quick fixes; it’s about reclaiming wholeness in a world that often asks us to disconnect from ourselves.
We’re Now an Official John Muir Award Provider!
Altar of Earth is honoured to be an official provider of the John Muir Award a nationally recognised environmental award scheme that encourages people to connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places.
This partnership beautifully aligns with our vision of healing through nature, and we’re proud to offer the award through our Light of Avalon initiative a series of transformative outdoor learning, nature immersion, and wellbeing programmes inspired by myth, land, and sacred ecology.
As part of this initiative, we’re excited to share that UK-based participants in our flagship Antlered Path programme which supports veterans, first responders, and trauma survivors are also eligible to receive the John Muir Award as part of their healing journey. This offers not only formal recognition, but a meaningful way to honour their connection with the land as a vital part of recovery and personal growth.
Through the John Muir Award, participants will:
Discover wild, sacred places and deepen their awareness of natural cycles
Explore the land through therapeutic, creative, and embodied activities
Conserve through acts of ecological care, ritual, and restoration
Share their experiences through reflection, storytelling, or community offerings
Whether you're joining us through the Light of Avalon initiative or participating in The Antlered Path, the John Muir Award celebrates your commitment to reconnection with yourself, with nature, and with a deeper sense of purpose.
