The Art of the Ancient: Craftsmanship & Heritage
Beyond the vigour of combat and the grit of the wild, lies the quiet reverence for creation, the art of the ancient. This is where hands transform raw materials into objects of beauty and utility, a practice as old as humanity itself. Our ancestral crafting sessions are a tribute to the ingenuity and artistry of those who came before us.
Here, young people learn:
To fashion from the Earth: Working with wood, leather, fibre, and clay, to understand the gifts of nature and the patience required to transform them.
The stories in every stitch and carve: Each craft connects us to a lineage of makers, allowing us to touch history with our own hands.
The joy of creation: The profound satisfaction of seeing a tangible item emerge from one's own skill and imagination.
This 'art of the ancient' nurtures patience, fine motor skills, and a deep appreciation for heritage, allowing young minds to express their creativity in truly unique and timeless ways.

“The wound is the place where the light enters you”
At Light of Avalon, we honour the simple yet profound truth that children do not stop needing joy, connection, or play when they are grieving. Our grief camps offer more than just a place to heal they offer a space to be whole. We weave together the timeless spirit of summer camp with a clinically-informed, trauma-sensitive approach to peer support. Here, grief is not pathologized it is seen, heard, and held in community. Children are invited to connect with others who have lived through similar loss, creating bonds that speak the unspoken and often last far beyond the final day of camp.
What may appear, at first glance, to be an ordinary camp with cabins, sports fields, and songs around a fire is, in truth, a carefully held container. Each element is intentional. The cabins become spaces for shared living and emotional attunement. The playing fields, places where children rediscover trust and self-expression through movement and laughter. The campfire becomes a sacred circle where silence, storytelling, and presence allow grief to soften in the warmth of community.
Supported by experienced clinicians and grief-informed mentors, children are met exactly where they are. Our team guides each camper through developmentally-appropriate experiences that help them build inner resources, name their emotions, and feel less alone in their pain. Through this integration of play and presence, we support the restoration of what trauma often threatens connection, regulation, and the permission to feel.
Because grief does not ask children to grow up too fast but it often forces them to. At Light of Avalon, we give them space to return to themselves.
